While waiting for my boys, I popped into this middle eastern market and deli. Oh, I could look and shop for hours!!! The spices were amazing along with the different pitas and flatbreads -in all shapes and sizes and flavors- the exotic fruits and fresh dates are really fun and new to me...oh, and the dessert bar? Shut up---if I weren't dieting, I'd have bought a tray of goodies as well!

It's all about the plums right now. Do you love them? Besides eating them fresh, in their perfect ripe state, do you bake with them? I haven't played with them before; but, I'm seeing a lot of fall desserts with them.... Here's a beautiful pic (I borrowed) from Jamie Oliver's crew, across the pond. Try something new...💜 Xo j 💚 My mom & dad always talks about Angie, the sous chef at Meals On Wheels and what a kind soul she is. Dad says: "I told her about you and that you tried out for Master Chef. (Thinking: "Ok, thanks Dad..."🙈😊) The next time you're in town, drive me to work so you can meet her."
..... You can't understand what a person's job really entails until you see it for yourself. So, last week, dad asked me to drop him off at work and meet his co-workers, Angie in particular. Unlike my hour drive to work, my parents only drive a few miles, which is convenient. I drove into the complex and dad says: "That one....pull over by that truck. That's mine. It's the oldest one" (with a chuckle). I met a few drivers and other kitchen staff; and, there she was, hunched over hard at work already. Dad had to interrupt Angie to introduce us. And, then I knew what he and my mom were talking about. She turned and gave me this gorgeous ear-to-ear smile and was beyond gracious, taking a few minutes to visit with me. ..... You see, my parents are now considered "elderly" (it's true😉) and people might wonder why they opted to volunteer their time. "Why not stay at home and enjoy your retirement?" some have asked. (To clarify, dad started this position as a volunteer; but, with a shortage of helpers, it became a paid position.) Mom has gone on the route, dropping off food to a large number of people, as a help-mate to my dad on those blistering hot summer days we will soon forget about, as Fall approaches. Mom says: "It's a long day and a lot of work for dad. I don't mind helping him out, especially when he has a route and a half to drive." It can be a 7 hour day for dad; but, it keeps him busy and he likes helping out. ..... I think it's great what they are doing for the community. It's exhausting but dad seems to enjoy it. As a working registered nurse, I am always impressed to see a large number of elderly folks volunteering at the hospital. We appreciate their support and they probably don't realize how important they are to our system. ...... In conclusion, my heart was warmed to have met Ms. Angie and the team at Meals on Wheels in Troy. They are a very hard working organized group! Keep up the effort! Xo j 💚 I've said this before and I'll say it again: "You must try Savage Jerky beef jerky, sriracha bacon and, now, their smoldering hot pineapple habanero bbq sauce! It's HOT with a sweet kiss of pineapple flavoring! 💛🔥🍍🌶 A little goes a long way.....seriously! It's worth a try if you like a little spice in your life.

Among so many wonderful choices, I had scallops over a creamy risotto with fresh peas & microgreens. It was absolutely delightful! But, do you want to know what the best part was...? Michael, took me to their magic kingdom....no, not the pulsing kitchen....their greenhouse. It was spectacular! The scene: purple flourescent lighting, the smell of earthy potting soil and rows and rows of sprouting microgreens & fresh herbs! All I can say is: "Bravo! I'm so impressed & can't wait to come back for another incredible dining experience!"
Thank you to the head Chef & stellar kitchen crew for letting me take a sneak peak! I truly appreciate it! Xo, J 💚 In other culinary news, Ann Arbor has plenty of trendy restaurants to choose from. On a whim, my kids & I popped into Belly Deli and sampled pork banh mi, grilled steak sandwiches, rice balls & fried pork belly buns.
Bánh mì (/ˈbæn ˌmiː/; Vietnamese pronunciation: [ɓǎɲ mî]) is a Vietnamese term for all kinds of bread. The word is derived from bánh (bread) and mì(wheat, also spelled mì in northern Vietnam). Bread, or more specifically the baguette, was introduced by the French during its colonial period.[1] The bread most commonly found in Vietnam is a single-serving baguette, which is usually more airy than its Western counterpart, with a thinner crust. Gua bao(Chinese: 刈包 or 割包; pinyin: guàbāo; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: koah-pau; literally: "cut bread"),[1] also known as steamed bao,[2] pork belly buns,[3] or ambiguously, bao,[4] is a Taiwanesesnack food consisting of a slice of stewed meat and other condiments sandwiched between flat steamed bread. The steamed bread is typically 6–8 centimetres (2.4–3.1 in) in size, semi-circular and flat in form, with a horizontal fold that, when opened, gives the appearance that it has been sliced. The traditional filling for gua bao is a slice of red-cooked porkbelly, typically dressed with stir-fried suan cai (pickled mustard greens), cilantro, and ground peanuts. Now that you've had a culinary education, trust me, when I say: "They LOVED everything...(and so did I😍)! So, stop in for a fresh perspective in Asian authenticity! Xo j 💚 |
